Knife Making Gathering
May 2/3/4, 2008
The weekend brought together many familiar faces and a handful of new ones. It was refreshing to teach to such a large group and get reacquainted. In total there were 23 people.
The knife making skills were taught by Cole and Cory, with assistance from Stephen and Walter Jeschke.
Most knives made on the weekend were made from pieces of bed frame. The process involved forging the metal by heating it up in a hot fire and pounding out the shape of the knife.
After the shape was made, the rough filing and grinding was done to get a workable shape. Then the metal was heated super hot again and dipped in oil in the hardening process. After that, any finishing work was done to make a useable edge on the blade.
Kim brought some metal she got from a manufacturer and some people used that to make some rather scary looking knives. Cezary drilled some holes in his metal ready to have a wooden handle put in place on the knife.
Other skills such as hand drill, self defence, and bow drill were also practised and taught to one another during spare time on the weekend.
The food was prepared and cooked by Sequoia and Cory and it satisfied our eager stomachs after long times in front of the fire pounding metal.
David and Kathy were fantastic hosts as usual and they provided us with some very important tools to make this weekend possible.
It was a long weekend of hard work and everybody who set out to make a metal tool (knife, arrowhead, spear head) came out of the weekend with a working piece of metal and the skills to make more in the future.
